Parish-based
classes
Over
the last few years, our policy has been to respond to the
invitation of deaneries and parishes which are able and willing
to host classes. “Able” is defined as having a classroom
available on a regular basis, a site coordinator to manage local
liaisons, including recruitment, hospitality, assistance to the
instructor, and attendance. “Willing” starts with a conviction
that the Ministry Formation classes are a key ingredient in
evangelization because they enable participants to articulate
their faith with confidence and takes that belief into providing
ways to help make it possible. Classes are geared to students
who wish to take them for credit by putting in the extra hours
between classes for study and assignments, but are open to audit
students as well.
For those of you who are working towards the
Basic Theology Certificate, these classes are both a blessing
and a curse. It’s a blessing to be able to pick up some of the
required courses in a group setting near to home. It’s a curse
in the sense that the ad hoc nature of the scheduling doesn’t
lend itself to planning. Also, we need a minimum number of
students to justify providing a qualified faculty instructor.
Providence is leading us toward a more
established scheduling plan. The Southern Oregon Vicariate has
taken the lead with making the entire eight courses available in
a series, and St. Anthony, Tigard plans to do the same. St.
Joseph, Salem began the series this spring with plans to
continue in the fall.

RETREAT I:
CALLED TO SERVE
We had a
full house here at the Griffin Center for the April 25-27, 2008
Growth in the Spirit retreat. We joked that it should have been
called the “I-5” retreat as students trekked in fro m
Ashland, Medford, Grants Pass, Cave Junction, and Cottage Grove,
as well as team members Terry Christiansen from Roseburg and
Deanna Valenzuela from Veneta. However, the coast and “locals”
were represented as well, and we were once again fortunate to
have on the team two staff members from the Grotto, Father
Ignatius Kissel, OSM, and Sister Val Lewandoski, OSM. Designed
around Standard One: Personal and Spiritual Maturity, the times
of silent reflection and sharing allowed each participant to
develop an individualized plan for pursuing the call to
holiness.

unparalleled opportunity to pray and study and exchange ideas
with like-minded people from all across our local church of

PLANNING PRACTICUM PROJECTS
After you’ve
taken most of your Advanced courses, you’ll have a better sense
of how you can develop a project which puts what you’ve learned
to practical use. First, you’ll want to consult with the
Director of that specialty about your ideas. Often, a project
you’ve dreamed about doing, but always put on the back burner
will get your attention as a great combination.
